Welcome !

We welcome you to Ascension!

All are welcome to worship, study and fellowship with us. Sunday school for adults and youth goes from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Worship is 10:00 a.m.

This week's news from Ascension ~ Remember that Thursday Nov 10 is quilting at the church starting about 10:00 am, and we can always use a few more helping hands. Its always a good feeling to know that a few fun hours together creating quilts keeps disaster victims warm for years.

This Sunday is Thank Offering Sunday. A Thankoffering is an offering given as an expression of thanks. Women of the Lutheran Church have been gathering for Thankoffering services since the early 1900’s. It is a tradition, grounded in our celebration of community, in which we meet together as faithful women, joyfully giving thanks and praise for what God has given us.

There are moments in each day when we can and should be thankful to God. When any of these significant moments happen, we can thank God in many ways. Most often we offer a silent or verbal word of thanks. Some of the women have a tradition of combining our prayer of thanks with an offering gift, a Thankoffering. We place a monetary gift into our Thankoffering boxes as a further expression of thanks. This connection of offering and prayer helps us to recognize more fully how many blessings we receive. It allows us to complete the circle of giving -- God gives to us and we, in turn, give back to God.

On Thankoffering Sunday, we have the opportunity collectively to give thanks and present our offerings. The moneys we have collected over the year in our Thankoffering boxes will be received. Our Thankofferings help us to be more aware of God's many blessings to us each day. In turn, our offerings extend the mission of the Women of the ELCA and the ELCA at large.

“'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'”
Matthew 25:34-40, RSV

Nov. 27th the children will make Advent/Christmas ornaments that will be hung on a real live Christmas tree during Sunday School time as they listen to the explanation of the Season of Advent and Christmas. Sunday Dec. 4th right after church the youth will gather together and drive up to Johnson Mill and cut down a Christmas tree that will be put up in the entrance of the Church. This tree will hold the ornaments that the children make on Nov. 27th. Our Christmas Program theme is "Christmas Around the World".

Paul tells us, “knowledge puffs up, but love builds up,” and reminds us that, instead of thinking our particular way of doing something is best, our focus should lie in how we see and share the love of God with each other. When we feed our need to be in control, we break down the relationships that are gifts from God. We put ourselves in the place of God who has all knowledge in love. Love is how we are built. Our God, who creates out of love and sends Jesus out of love and sustains us with the Spirit through love, knows us and loves us.

These words come from 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, upon which the Lectionary text study for Jan. 29, 2012 is based. Additionally, 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 tells about agape love. It is described as being patient, kind, truthful, unselfish, trusting, believing, hopeful, and enduring. It is not jealous, boastful, arrogant, rude, selfish, or angry. True love never fails. The description perfectly fits God's love toward us, and should be the way we love each other and God. The Bible says that this unconditional love is more important than everything else (a partial list includes oratory ability, prophecy, knowledge, faith, philanthropy and hope). All of these things, which are "good" things, will pass away. Only love is eternal, since love will be the basis of eternal life.
